Coinbase is teasing Pokémon card pack openings on its app, with almost no details attached

The crypto exchange says you will rip packs on your phone with every pull backed by a physical card you can vault or ship. It has not named a Pokémon partner, a launch date, prices or a blockchain.

Coinbase has teased a Pokémon trading card pack-opening feature for its app, putting a cryptocurrency exchange into a hobby that has spent two years being priced out of reach.

What Coinbase said

The model described is the one GameStop already runs with its Power Packs: you buy a digital pack, the app shows you the opening, and the cards you pull exist physically somewhere, either held in storage for you or posted out. The difference Coinbase is implying is crypto plumbing underneath it, and the company hinted at blockchain involvement when users raised the idea of ripping packs "on the chain."

What it didn't say

Almost everything that would let you judge the offer. There is no launch date, no pricing, no list of supported countries, no indication of which Pokémon sets are involved, no pull rates, no vaulting fee and no shipping cost. Coinbase has not said which blockchain would be used, how ownership gets recorded, whether cards arrive graded, or whether you are pulling from a sealed pack or being assigned a card from a pre-opened inventory - a distinction that decides whether this is pack opening at all.

It has also not named a Pokémon partner or said whether The Pokémon Company is involved in any capacity. The tease lands as the 30th Celebration set reaches shelves, which is not a coincidence.

Why it matters

Digital pack ripping is already a crowded, lightly regulated space that resembles gambling more than collecting, and Coinbase entering it moves that model closer to financial infrastructure. The missing details are the ones that would tell you which it is.

Why it matters

Digital pack-opening services sit close to gambling with little oversight, and a major exchange entering the space raises the stakes on details Coinbase has not yet disclosed.
