Final Fantasy XIV Mobile is over. The Chinese version's servers went down on September 30 at 11:00 UTC+8, closing a game that launched on June 19, 2025 and never made it out of one territory. The global version that had been expected alongside it was cancelled rather than delayed.

What happened

The shutdown was set in motion in July, when developer and operator LightSpeed Studios - part of Tencent - suspended new registrations and in-game top-ups and gave players a little over two months of notice. Square Enix, which licensed the Final Fantasy XIV rights, was party to the decision.

The reason given was corporate rather than technical. According to the announcement, "due to adjustments in business operations and changes in the market environment, Tencent and Square Enix have, through amicable negotiation, decided to terminate the licensing agreement." Nobody has pointed at player numbers, revenue or a specific failure.

What happens to accounts

Not much survives. Player accounts, character information and related data are to be deleted in line with China's Personal Information Protection Law, except where regulations or user agreements require otherwise. The one thing still running is the paperwork: forums and customer support stay open until October 15 at 11:00 UTC+8, which is the window for anyone chasing a refund or a records request.

Why it matters

This was one of the more serious attempts to put a full MMO on phones - a licensed adaptation of a game with a decade of content behind it, built by one of Tencent's biggest studios. It lasted roughly fifteen months. For players outside China who had been waiting on the global build, there is now nothing to wait for, and Square Enix has not said whether a mobile Final Fantasy XIV will be attempted again.

Why it matters

A major studio's licensed mobile MMO lasting fifteen months, with the global version cancelled outright, is a hard data point about how brutal the licensed mobile market has become.
