Fortnite's Rocket Racing is being retired, and your cars come with you

The racing mode Epic launched alongside Festival and LEGO Fortnite in 2023 is being switched off, with October 1 given as the date. Vehicle Locker cosmetics survive; UEFN islands built from Rocket Racing templates do not.

Rocket Racing, the Rocket League-derived racing mode Epic added to Fortnite at the end of 2023, is being retired. Epic flagged the closure back in March as part of a wider cull of underperforming Fortnite modes, and coverage drawing on Epic's own support pages puts the switch-off at October 1.

What goes, and what stays

The mode itself goes, and so does everything built on top of it: UEFN islands made with Rocket Racing templates are being retired alongside it, and Rocket Racing Quests were pulled earlier.

What survives is the part players paid for. Vehicle cosmetics stay in your Vehicle Locker and remain usable elsewhere in Fortnite, so a Batmobile bought for Rocket Racing is not stranded - a better outcome than mode shutdowns usually offer.

Part of a bigger retreat

Rocket Racing is the last of three modes to go. Ballistic and Festival Battle Stage were both removed in April, and the three closures were announced together in March alongside layoffs at Epic. The stated reason was engagement: these were modes that did not hold an audience.

Why it matters

Epic spent 2023 arguing that Fortnite was becoming a platform rather than a game, and Rocket Racing was one of the three pillars it put up to prove it. Two years on, that pillar and two more are gone, and what is left is the battle royale, LEGO Fortnite and creator content. It is a fairly direct answer to the question of how many modes one launcher can actually sustain.

Why it matters

Rocket Racing was one of the modes Epic used to argue Fortnite was a platform, not a game. Its removal closes out a retreat that has taken three first-party modes in six months.
