Gears of War: E-Day launches without chainsaw duels or meat shields

The Coalition's studio creative director says both series staples missed the cut because E-Day was rebuilt from nothing. He hasn't ruled out adding them later.

Two things Gears of War players have been doing to each other for twenty years are not in Gears of War: E-Day at launch. Lancer chainsaw duels — the button-mash standoff that happens when two revving chainsaws meet — and meat shields, which let you haul a downed enemy around as cover, have both been left out.

The Coalition's explanation

Studio creative director Matt Searcy addressed the omissions in an interview with Dexerto for its Fall Damage series, and the reason he gives is foundational rather than creative: E-Day was built from an empty hard drive. "Everything is new, every mechanic, every animation," he said, which meant the team had to rank features against each other instead of inheriting them.

"We didn't have that foundation," Searcy said. "There's a lot of really cool features in there, a mix of old and new, and the package we have is where we got to." He did not close the door on either mechanic returning: "We love chainsaw duels, we love meat shields. So we'll see what the future brings."

What that means for launch

Searcy's phrasing is worth reading precisely. He is describing a prioritisation call made under a from-scratch rebuild, and he frames a return as possible rather than planned — there is no commitment to a patch, a date or a post-launch roadmap slot for either feature.

E-Day's premium, premium-upgrade and collector's editions unlocked early access on October 1, with the worldwide launch on October 6.

Why it matters

Chainsaw duels and meat shields are the kind of mechanics people quote when they describe what Gears feels like, so a launch without them is a real change in texture — and a useful reminder that E-Day is a new codebase rather than a remake of old ones.

Why it matters

Chainsaw duels and meat shields are signature Gears mechanics, so leaving both out at launch changes how the game plays — and confirms E-Day is a ground-up rebuild rather than an iteration on past entries.
