Sega is teasing a House of the Dead VR attraction with an 85-inch front door

A 30-second Sega Amusements teaser and a quiet page on the company's arcade site point to House of the Dead: Reawakened, a two-player VR cabinet built like a gothic manor. It is due at IAAPA Expo in November.

Sega Amusements

Sega Amusements put out a 30-second teaser on September 30 showing shadowed glimpses of a gothic-styled arcade cabinet and a pair of tethered gun controllers, ending on the line "something is reawakening" and a note that it will be at IAAPA Expo. The name is not in the video. It is in a URL.

What has actually been shown

Arcade Heroes found a page on Sega's arcade site for House of the Dead: Reawakened carrying nothing but a cryptic message, which is how the title became public. Sega has not issued a press release, so the detail beyond the teaser comes from Attractions Magazine, which reported on the machine ahead of the official reveal.

By that account the cabinet is built as a miniature gothic manor: an 85-inch display serving as the front door, two 43-inch vertical screens as shuttered windows, animated lighting, a working clock tower and environmental audio. The shutters and door physically open to reveal the VR play area behind them, which is both a jump scare and the entrance. Up to two players use commercial VR headsets with haptic-recoil gun controllers and their own 2.1-channel audio, across three missions built in Unreal Engine 5. Sega's own framing, per the same report, is that this is an anchor attraction - the machine an arcade or family entertainment centre puts out front to pull people in.

Why it matters

The House of the Dead turns 30 this year, and Sega's last new entry for arcades was Scarlet Dawn in 2018. Nothing in any of this suggests a console or PC version: this is a location-based machine, aimed at operators, and the November IAAPA Expo in Orlando is where it gets properly unveiled.

Why it matters

Sega is still building new arcade hardware for the House of the Dead's 30th year, and this one is a VR attraction designed to anchor a venue rather than sit in a row of cabinets.
