The writer behind The Witcher 3's Bloody Baron quest is back at CD Projekt

Karolina Stachyra, who wrote the dialogue and cutscenes for Family Matters, has been consulting for CD Projekt since February and rejoined full-time in August. The studio confirmed it but will not say what she is working on.

Family Matters - the Bloody Baron questline - is the bit of The Witcher 3 people still point to eleven years on, and one of the writers behind it has quietly returned to CD Projekt after a decade away.

A quiet return

Karolina Stachyra wrote the dialogue and cutscenes for Family Matters, and worked on both Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine before leaving after the latter shipped in 2016. According to PC Gamer, her own LinkedIn profile shows she has been consulting for the studio since February and came back as a full-time writer in August.

Nobody noticed until a post on X flagged it over the weekend. CD Projekt has since confirmed to PC Gamer that Stachyra is back, but declined to say which project she is on.

Why anyone cares

Family Matters is the standard the rest of the genre gets measured against: a missing-persons job that unwinds into a story about alcoholism and domestic abuse, kept inside The Witcher's dark fantasy through the botchling, and branching enough to be worth replaying. Between leaving CD Projekt and returning, Stachyra worked as narrative director at Techland and at GSC Game World, the studio behind Stalker 2.

Why it matters

CD Projekt has The Witcher 4 in development and a new Witcher 3 expansion, Songs of the Past, due in 2027. The studio has lost a lot of the senior narrative staff who made its reputation, so getting one of them back matters regardless of which of those she ends up on - and Ciri, The Witcher 4's lead, was central to the Baron's story in the first place.

Why it matters

CD Projekt's reputation rests on quest writing more than anything else, and rehiring one of the authors of its most celebrated questline is a concrete signal about where it is putting that craft next.
