The Lego PlayStation goes on sale today. Sony and Lego's near 1:1 recreation of the original 1995 console is 1,911 pieces and about 10.5 inches, or 26cm, wide once built.

Where and when you can buy it

PlayStation's own store at direct.playstation.com has it from October 1 in the US, UK, France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and Portugal. Lego Insiders members get early access through Lego.com on the same day. General availability at Lego.com and in Lego Stores follows on October 4.

Sony lists it at $179.99 in the US, 159.99 euros in Europe, 139.99 pounds in the UK and 27,980 yen including tax in Japan.

What is in the box

Alongside the console there is a brick-built original PlayStation controller that plugs into it, and the console's shell hides two dioramas you can pull out and display separately. One is Gran Turismo, with a miniature track and scaled-down cars. The other is Ape Escape, an island scene with a monkey whose helmet light can be swapped between blue and red.

Steffi Steffen, senior director of licensed merchandise at Sony Interactive Entertainment, framed the set as something that "celebrates the games, experiences, and the feelings of play we have shared as a community for over 30 years."

Why it matters

Sony has licensed plenty of PlayStation merchandise, but a full-size Lego PS1 with playable-looking buttons and two game dioramas is the first that treats the hardware itself as the collectible.
