MapleStory Classic World's Steam version makes you install the whole modern game to play it
Nexon has posted pre-download instructions ahead of Founder's Access on October 6, and buried in them is a real catch: on Steam, Classic World ships inside MapleStory's build, so you install both.
Nexon has published its preparation guide for MapleStory Classic World ahead of Founder's Access, which opens on Tuesday, October 6 at 11:00 AM PDT - 2:00 PM EDT, 8:00 PM CEST, or 4:00 AM AEST on October 7.
Two clients, two very different downloads
The useful detail is the platform split. Through the Nexon Launcher, Classic World is a smaller standalone client, and Nexon says you do not need MapleStory installed at all to play it. On Steam it is the opposite: Nexon says Steam's technical framework means MapleStory and Classic World are packaged as a single unified build, so you have to install the base game to reach the classic servers. The company recommends the Nexon Launcher outright if drive space is a concern.
There is also a limit on how much you can pre-load. The Classic World client itself cannot be downloaded before launch day, so Nexon's advice for launcher users is simply to install the launcher and sign in now, then grab the client when servers open. Steam users can pre-load the packaged build in the meantime.

Nostalgia servers live and die on launch-day friction, and "install a 2026 MMO to play its 2000s version" is a lot of friction to discover at 11am on a Tuesday. If you bought in on Steam, the download is worth starting now.
