Modern Warfare 4 is adding Collateral, a round-based mode with a Counter-Strike-style economy

Activision's PC breakdown for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 detailed Collateral, a single-life mode where teams trade attack and defence over two bomb sites and buy their gear with cash earned between rounds. Killstreaks, respawns and custom loadouts are switched off.

Buried in Activision's PC breakdown for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is the most structurally un-Call-of-Duty mode the series has shipped in years. It is called Collateral, and it runs on a buy economy.

How Collateral works

Activision describes Collateral as a mode aimed at Search and Destroy players and the competitive community. Teams alternate between attacking and defending two bomb sites across a match. Everyone starts each match with a pistol and earns in-game cash as they play, which is spent on upgrades between rounds. Money you have earned carries over from round to round; the loadout you bought does not survive your death.

The list of things Collateral turns off is the interesting part. Respawns, killstreaks, automatic health regeneration and custom loadouts are all disabled. Activision's own framing is that players should "make smart purchases to improve your odds in the high stakes, single life gameplay of Collateral."

If that sounds familiar, it is because the save-or-spend loop is the spine of Counter-Strike 2 and Valorant rather than anything Call of Duty has traditionally leaned on. Search and Destroy has given the series single-life rounds for well over a decade, but never a round-by-round economy attached to them.

When you can play it

Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23 across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 and PC, with the PC release covering Xbox on PC, Battle.net and Steam. Preloading on PC opens October 15 at 9am PT, and from October 16 anyone who has digitally pre-ordered gets early access to the campaign. Activision has not said whether Collateral is available at launch or arrives later.

Why it matters

Call of Duty has spent years watching the tactical shooter audience go to Valve and Riot. Collateral is the first time the series has built a mode that plays by those rules, and if it is genuinely PC-only, the platform split will be the first thing console players ask about.

Why it matters

Call of Duty has never shipped a mode built on a round-by-round buy economy. Collateral is a direct move at the Counter-Strike and Valorant audience, and the reported PC-only limitation would make it the series' most restricted marquee mode in years.
