Octopath Traveler and its sequel land on Switch 2 today at full price, with no upgrade and no save transfer
Square Enix's Switch 2 versions of both Octopath Traveler games are out on October 1 at $59.99 each. Nintendo's own listings confirm they are separate Switch 2-only products and that save data does not move across from the Switch originals.

Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II are both on Nintendo Switch 2 as of today, October 1. Square Enix announced the pair back on July 13, timed to the series' eighth anniversary, and promised improved resolution and frame rate over the original Switch releases.
What you're buying
Each game is $59.99 on its own. Square Enix is also selling them together digitally and as a physical bundle edition for Switch 2. Nintendo's store lists both as Switch 2-exclusive: its page for the first game carries the publisher's warning that "this game is only compatible with Nintendo Switch 2" and cannot be played on the original console.
The part that has drawn the most attention is what isn't on offer. Nintendo lists both as standalone full-price products rather than Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrades, so there is no discount for owning either game on the original Switch. The listings also state plainly that "save data is incompatible between the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 versions," so a long-running party does not come with you.
Context
Both games are ACQUIRE-developed turn-based RPGs built around eight separate protagonists and the HD-2D art style Square Enix has reused widely since. The first launched on Switch in 2018, the sequel on February 24, 2023. The Switch 2 editions are optimisation passes rather than new content.
Square Enix has not said whether an upgrade path might be added later.
Why it matters
Square Enix has handled Switch-to-Switch 2 re-releases inconsistently, and charging full price twice with no save transfer is the harshest version of that so far - worth knowing before you buy a second copy of a game you already finished.
