Pokemon HOME links up with FireRed and LeafGreen on October 7, and there is no way back

Pokemon HOME goes down for maintenance on October 7 and returns as version 4.1.0 with the Switch re-releases of FireRed and LeafGreen attached. Anything you move out of Kanto stays out.

The Pokemon Company has a date for the connection FireRed and LeafGreen players on Switch have been waiting on since the pair arrived. Pokemon HOME goes offline for maintenance on Wednesday, October 7 and comes back as version 4.1.0 with both Kanto remakes linked, per the service's own maintenance notice, which Nintendo Life reported first among the enthusiast outlets.

What the link actually does

Once 4.1.0 is live you can deposit Pokemon caught in FireRed or LeafGreen into HOME and send them on to other modern Pokemon games. The Pokemon Company is unusually blunt about the limit in its own announcement: once a Pokemon from either game is brought to another game in the series, it will be unable to return. Traffic does not flow the other way either, so nothing from a newer game can visit Kanto. In practice, moving a team out is a permanent decision.

A free Celebi and a bigger box

Completing the FireRed and LeafGreen Pokedex earns the Mythical Pokemon Celebi through HOME's mobile app, and you do not have to deposit anything to qualify because Pokedex registrations sync to HOME on their own. Premium Plan subscribers also get a storage jump from 6,000 Pokemon to 9,000 at no extra cost. Separately, Pokemon caught with a Safari Ball in Pokemon GO can be transferred for the first time, though the ball becomes a Strange Ball once it lands.

The Bank deadline is still coming

The same announcement restates that Pokemon Bank shuts down on February 25, 2027 at 7:00 p.m. PST. After that, HOME is the only long-term storage left for older collections.

Why it matters

FireRed and LeafGreen have been walled off from the rest of the modern Pokemon ecosystem since they landed on Switch. This is the bridge that lets a Kanto team join a wider collection, and the one-way rule means it is worth thinking about before you press transfer.
