Sega and Epic put numbers on Sonic in Fortnite: 14 million Eggman defeats in one weekend
In a joint Famitsu interview, Sega president Shuji Utsumi and Epic Games Japan's Takayuki Kawasaki put numbers to the Sonic crossover and describe a deal that took years and a lot of arguing about the shape of Sonic's head.

Sega and Epic Games have put figures to the Sonic the Hedgehog crossover in Fortnite, and they are the kind of numbers that make a licensing department very happy. In the collaboration's first weekend, roughly three days of play, Fortnite players collected more than 1.5 billion rings and defeated Dr. Eggman more than 14 million times.
The figures come from a joint interview published by Famitsu on September 26 with Shuji Utsumi, Sega's president and COO, and Takayuki Kawasaki, who heads Epic Games Japan.
Years, not months
Kawasaki says the collaboration took years of preparation rather than months, and pushes back on the idea that mutual admiration makes these deals easy. Borrowing another company's character raises the quality bar rather than lowering it, he argues, and both sides went through long discussions before settling anything.
The head was the problem
Utsumi is candid about where the friction was. Sonic's proportions, specifically the size of his head relative to his body, took real work to resolve inside Fortnite's art style, and the teams went back and forth on whether to drop Sonic in unchanged or adapt him to the world he was landing in.
Sega also insisted on a reason for him being there at all, writing its own backstory and telling it through a comic rather than letting the appearance stand as a costume. Green Hill, loops and the spin attack all had to work as Fortnite systems while still reading as Sonic.
Why it matters
Crossovers usually get announced and never measured. Hard engagement figures, plus an admission that it took years and a custom backstory, show what the biggest publishers now expect before lending out a mascot.
