A ShinyHunters suspect is being held in the Netherlands, in the case that runs through Rockstar

Dutch police have confirmed that a 24-year-old man from Amsterdam is in custody over the hacking group ShinyHunters, which breached Rockstar Games this year. A court extended his detention by at least 90 days.

The Dutch national police have confirmed an arrest in their investigation into ShinyHunters, the extortion group whose breach of Rockstar Games earlier this year put GTA Online's finances on the internet.

What the police say

In a statement published on September 29, the police said a 24-year-old man from Amsterdam was arrested on September 15 in Driebergen. He is suspected of participating in a criminal organisation - ShinyHunters - and, separately, of attempted incitement of two murders. The force says a great deal of information was found on his laptop, including material about two killings that were to be carried out abroad, with indications that the suspect gave the orders.

The case is being run by the national investigation and interventions unit's high tech crime team under the national prosecutor's office. On September 29 a Rotterdam court extended his detention by at least 90 days.

The police statement names Odido, Pornhub and Ticketmaster among the group's alleged victims. It does not mention Rockstar Games, and it does not name the suspect.

The Rockstar connection

That link comes from the reporting rather than the police. ShinyHunters breached Rockstar in April, tried to extort the company and, according to Kotaku, was refused. The leaked material is where the widely repeated figure of GTA Online earning over a million dollars a day came from - a number good enough that Take-Two's share price went up on it.

Why it matters

The Rockstar breach was one of the biggest in games this year, and this is the first sign of anyone facing consequences for it - though the Dutch case is far larger than Rockstar.

ConfidenceMedium — High for the arrest, the suspicions and the 90-day extension, which come from the Dutch police's own statement. Low for the suspect's identity and for the Rockstar link, neither of which the police confirm.
