Sonic Team's boss says the series is still only halfway to what it could be

Takashi Iizuka told Continue magazine that Sonic is "only halfway to reaching its full potential" at 35, recalling that the original team's target was Disney. Sega, meanwhile, is eyeing audiences it has been missing.

Thirty-five years, a billion-dollar film series and a licensing business that Sega says clears a billion dollars a year on its own, and the man running Sonic Team thinks the job is half done.

What Iizuka said

Speaking to the Japanese magazine Continue in comments reported by VGC, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka said: "To be honest, we believe that Sonic is still only halfway to reaching its full potential." He framed that against the ambition the series started with: "When we created the first Sonic the Hedgehog, the development team at the time used to say, 'Let's aim for Disney.'"

By his reckoning those original ambitions have not been met, and film is where he sees the remaining ground being made up. That is not an idle position given the movies have grossed a billion dollars since 2020 and are the reason Sonic's profile outside gaming looks nothing like it did a decade ago.

Where Sega thinks the growth is

The same reporting points at two specific gaps. Sonic creative director Kazuyuki Hoshino said a promotional tour turned up far more enthusiasm than expected in Asian markets, particularly among younger fans in Thailand, South Korea and Taiwan. And Sega's VP of licensing, Alex Gomez, identified female audiences as an "underserved demographic," pointing at fashion, makeup and jewellery collaborations aimed at young adult women.

Neither comment mentions a game. That is the interesting part: the plan for the next half of Sonic's potential is being described in terms of films, regions and merchandise categories rather than a specific release.

Why it matters

Sonic is one of the few game franchises that now earns more from being a brand than from selling games, and hearing Sonic Team's own boss measure its future in films and licensing tells you where the series' priorities sit.
