Switch 2 firmware 23.0.1 fixes the slow app launches that came with last month's big update

Nintendo has pushed a small Switch 2 system update whose only listed change undoes a regression from version 23.0.0: software that occasionally took a long time to start, pause or close.

Nintendo released Switch 2 system version 23.0.1 on September 30, and the changelog is a single line. According to Nintendo's own support listing, it has "Fixed an issue from system version 23.0.0 where software occasionally took a long time to start, pause, or close."

What it fixes

That is a cleanup patch rather than a feature release. Version 23.0.0, the larger firmware that landed earlier in September, is named in the fix as the source of the problem: games and apps could hang for an unusually long moment when you opened them, suspended them or backed out to the home menu. Nintendo does not say how often it happened or what caused it, only that it has been addressed.

There is nothing else in the notes. No new features, no mention of system stability boilerplate, no changes to accounts, storage or the Switch 2's capture tools.

How to get it

Switch 2 consoles connected to the internet install system updates automatically, so most people will already have it. If you want to force it, the option sits in System Settings under System, then System Update.

Why it matters

A console that pauses for a beat every time you open a game is the kind of fault people notice daily, and this is the fix for it.
